The Isaan Region, or Northeast Thailand, has long struggled with poverty. As a result, the working age population has migrated to urban areas in search of job opportunities, and left behind their children and elderly parents. Such an environment has made children particularly vulnerable to illicit activities. In Southern Sisaket, football academies have offered after-school programs as a safe place for them to grow and develop skills. Some youth players are quite talented and wish to pursue a career in football. Hence, Khunhan United Football Club was founded to provide them a pathway to become professional players.
Some of our founders have operated two football academies in Southern Sisaket since 2009. These are Srilachai Junior Academy in Khunhan District and Thutpone Academy in Phusingh District. Their alumni have become successful players and coaches in recent years.
Khunhan is a district in Sisaket, and it is bordered to the south by Cambodia. Combined with five other districts in Southern Sisaket, the total population is approximately 500,000. Despite the popularity of football, there has not been a highly successful football club in this area.
Khunhan’s economy is largely driven by the agricultural sector. Its major products are lava durian, rubber, and jasmine rice. Two other important sectors are tourism and cross-border trade with Cambodia. Overall, Khunhan and five other districts in Southern Sisaket combined are considerably more vibrant than other areas in the province.
